Otay River water flows into the newly-breached former salt ponds on the San Diego Bay NWR.
Looking North, the Coronado bridge is visible in the distance, with the San Diego Bay NWR in the foreground. It is the site of the South San Diego Bay Coastal Restoration & Enhancement Project completed in fall of 2011. This photo captures the vivid colors of new algal growth taking place. The main channel of water here is a healthy mix of bay water and freshwater from the Otay River, which hasn't been able to flush the western salt ponds 10, 10a, and 11, since the 1950s.
