Gertie the Bolson tortoise was named in the 1970s by Ariel Appleton. When scientists first found Gertie in 1971 she was already a large adult tortoise, and scientists estimate she was around 30 years old at that time. As of 2023, she continues to lay eggs each year and is still at peak breeding age.
