Twenty-six eager anglers-to-be traded their #2 pencils for a rod and reel on spring break at Hatchery Creek! Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery's Fishing 101 for Kids offered a fun, free, morning of learning all about fishing.
Each student was paired with an experienced volunteer for a 1 on 1 learning environment, beginning with the basics like how to hold a rod/reel, tying on lures, and baiting a hook. Following on-stream instruction of how to cast, ethical fishing practices, and environmental awareness, the young anglers were ready to try their luck in Hatchery Creek! Equipped with their very own fishing poles and tackle boxes provided by the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, several of the attendees were able to reel in a rainbow trout! For most of the participants, this was their first introduction to fishing and resulted in catching their very first fish by the end of the event!
Special thanks to the friends of Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. for sponsoring this event and providing the poles, tackle boxes, and gear for the volunteers! Thanks, as well to our wonderful volunteers that are so good to show up and help at our events.
