Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery Hosts 35th Annual Catch A Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby

Written By

The 35th Annual Catch A Rainbow Kids Fishing Derby at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery was a success! Held on Kentucky’s Free Fishing Weekend of each year, participants were able to enjoy a day of free fishing, food, and giveaways all thanks to the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc., and multiple sponsors.

Approximately 1,000 participants tried their luck catching a rainbow trout at the derby where several kids caught their first fish and others were lucky enough to catch their limit! Equipped with cane poles, children ages 1-4 years old were able to fish the 4 large kiddie pool’s set up underneath the picnic pavilion while the 5–15-year-olds fished Hatchery Creek with their own gear. Beginning at 9 a.m., each age category fished for an hour followed by age-appropriate prize giveaways including bug collecting kits, camping chairs, fishing poles, tackle boxes, binoculars, game calls, tents, sleeping bags, bird watching kits, bicycles, etc.

This event is one of the many resources Wolf Creek NFH provides the community with to get people fishing and enjoying the outdoors. We are extremely thankful for our Friends Group, sponsors, and countless volunteers who help make this derby possible!

With Catch A Rainbow now behind us, we are looking forward to our annual fall fishing derbies in September!
