The Summer Solstice on June 21, 2022 was celebrated at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery with the Longest Day of Play event. This event was organized by the Russell County Health and Wellness Coalition Partnership, and provided fun, engaging outdoor activities for elementary students attending the Russell County Schools’ summer learning program. The goal of this event was to get children outside moving and enjoying nature!

Students were engaged in fun activities such as a hula hoop cooperation game, a water relay, nature trail walk, exploration of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery along with fish feeding, and demonstrations from the local sheriff’s department with a K-9 police dog. Lots of fun, smiles, exercise, and learning all happened at this event. All students attending the event also received a backpack filled with lots of goodies so the fun and activity could continue at home.

We appreciate all our partners in helping make this day a success. Several partners helped in planning the event, donating items for the backpacks, and many attended the event to help out with the different activities. Attending the event: Amy Coleman-United Health Care, Lisa Johnson-Anthem Health Care, K-9 trainer Harold Golden, Derrick Polston and Ronnie Golden- Russell County Sherriff Department, Shirley Roberson and Jennifer Dixson-Lake Cumberland Health Department, Patty Meece-Russell County Schools, Amy Roy-Jamestown Family Resource Center, Jonathan Oaks-UK Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Angela Boggs and Brenna Posey-Russell County Public Library. Without valuable partnerships, events like this would not be able to happen.
