With over 316 species of birds, one of the favorite activities on the refuge is birding refuge wide. The refuge hosts an area birding festival called "Wings of Winter Birding Festival" on Martin Luther King weekend in January. Birders note that some areas of the refuge are closed seasonally from Nov. 15th – Mar. 15th to provide sanctuary.
