Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District's 61 Waterfowl Production Areas provide numerous recreational opportunities to visitors every year. People enjoy viewing the unique geology and diverse wildlife. Wildlife-dependent recreation activities including hunting, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education and interpretation allow for public enjoyment while still protecting the wildlife and their habitats.

Activities

National wildlife refuges and wetland management districts offer us all a chance to unplug from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with our natural surroundings.  At Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District, enjoy activities such as wildlife observation and photography, hunting, and hiking and experience the grassland habitats and its wildlife.

Trails

Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District has one hiking trail for you to enjoy.

Trail Name:  Funk Peterson Wildlife Trail

Open Season:  Year-round

Length:  3 miles

Location of trail: Funk Waterfowl Production Area

Surface: Unpaved mowed trail with 650 of paved walkway

Difficulty:  Backcountry loop trail

Information:  Along the 3 mile backcountry loop trail, you can find a scenic viewpoint, interpretive signs, a handicap accessible wildlife viewing/hunting blind, a 650 foot concrete walkway with tracks embedded from the local wildlife, and a 150 foot boardwalk that extends into the wetland, that will allow you to get a little closer to nature. Activities include hiking, photography, hunting, and educational opportunities.

 

Other Facilities in the Complex

Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District and Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge are managed out of the Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District office.  Both Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District and Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge have similar habitat conservation needs, and combining these areas assists in providing consistency and effectively utilizing human and capital resources for both locations.
