Marin Islands National Wildlife Refuge and State Ecological Reserve consists of 326 acres of open bay waters and 13 acres of upland on two islands in San Rafael Bay (north of San Francisco Bay). Recreational fishing is allowed by boat on approximately 80 acres within two open water areas. All fishing is permitted according to state and federal regulations. Access to the fishing areas is from nearby marina. To protect heron and egret colonies from disturbance, fishing from shorelines of either island is prohibited. The islands are closed to public access. Beware of the tides as waters around the islands are shallow, and winds can pick up quickly by noon. In the morning, the water can be like glass –providing a calm and relaxing experience while casting into the bay.
