Visitor Center Volunteers at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is seeking dedicated volunteers to staff the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located approximately 8 miles north of Rodanthe, North Carolina. Located along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge features 12 miles of beach, three impoundments that support waterbirds, and dune and saltmarsh habitats. Pea Island is hugely popular with tourists and beachgoers, anglers, and birders. The Pea Island NWR Visitor Center and gift shop sees thousands of visitors monthly.

Visitor Center Volunteer duties include:

• Greet and provide information about the refuge, its wildlife, and rules and regulations to the public.

• Provide information about refuge programs and special events.

• Open/close visitor center, answer phones, organize supplies and storage areas, and maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior public areas.

Volunteers who are flexible, enjoy interacting with people of all ages and backgrounds, and have positive attitudes typically have excellent experiences working in the visitor services program. Training will be provided to teach volunteers the refuge’s rules, regulations, and how to present interpretive information to our visitors.

Visitor Center Volunteers typically commit to one 9-hour day per week, year-round. This position is most suitable for local area residents.
