Standing Black Bear

On Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, bears (Ursus americanus) are active. It's a good time to remind yourself to be careful when you drive the refuge both for your safety and for the wildlife too. You never know what will be in the road. When observing wildlife be sure and stay far enough away that wildlife doesn't pose a threat to you and that you don't alter their behavior. Photos like this one of a bear standing in the road makes it look like the photographer was near the bear, but great lenses and cameras allowed for this interesting picture being taken from a long, safe distance away.
