North America's Smallest Falcon

Measuring an average of only 9-12 inches (comparable to the size of a mourning dove) the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is a small bird of prey. Alligator River Refuge is evidently a great place for the kestrel to hunt. You can see them either flying low over the fields or perched on a post scanning the area for a meal. Meals may include insects, snakes, mice, lizards, bats, frogs and other birds.
