Fishing is available by canoe or car-top boat along nine miles of the Wallkill River as it passes through Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, which straddles the New Jersey-New York border. River access is available via Route 565, Bassetts Bridge Road and Oil City Road. The large pond at Owen’s Station Crossing offers great catch-and-release fishing and boasts a wheelchair accessible fishing dock and kayak launch. Species include bluegill and other sunfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, bullhead and pickerel. The Hidden Ponds Fishing Area off Lake Wallkill Road also offers catch-and-release fishing in three large ponds. The refuge is open to fishing year-round from sunrise to sunset. State fishing licenses are required. Please be aware that fishing from the Winding Waters Trail off Oil City Road is in New York state.
