Hunting and Fishing
Hunting is not permitted on the refuge; however, fishing is allowed in designated open-water areas. The closest fishing piers to the refuge are located at Pepper Park in National City and Bayside Park in Chula Vista.
Seasonal waterfowl hunting opportunities are available at Barrett Lake and Lake Sutherland, both operated by the City of San Diego.
Upland game hunting is offered within the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s San Felipe Valley Wildlife Area and Boden Canyon Ecological Reserve, as well as in portions of the Cleveland National Forest. Hunting is also allowed at San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.
