Insect Extravaganza - Friday Night at the Refuge

The Salmon Creek Unit will stay open until 8:00 p.m. Come for a walk along the Shorebird Loop during the evening hours and join Educational Speaker, Kevin Huntley, for an “Insect Extravaganza”.  Collection viewing begins at 6:00 p.m., presentation at 6:30 p.m. with time for questions and more viewing afterward.

Insects make up 83% of the world's terrestrial animal biomass!

Come find out the difference between a bug and an insect. Learn some insect superpowers, how they function and how to live with them better. Discover what a bioindicator is and just how important insects are.

This is an opportunity for people of all ages to see 80% of Humboldt's rarely seen (understudied) animal species by viewing Kevin’s personal collection of 362 Humboldt insect species, and graphics that he has created. Kevin thinks that his collection may be the most comprehensive of Humboldt species that exists!

Kevin Huntley has been researching the insect kingdom since 1989. His passion for these amazing animals has led him to develop several educational programs for the public. His first program was developed in 2013 for Wyndham in Sedona, Arizona. He has been recognized for his unique talents by the California State Parks where he created new interpretive programs about insects in the summer of 2023. His success has led him to become an independent speaker at local schools and other educational venues.  Visit https://kevinhuntley.my.canva.site/insect-website
