Summer Tanager is a Flash of Red

When you explore Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge you might see a flash of blue from a blue grosbeak, or yellow from a prothonotary warbler. But when it comes to a flash of red besides a male Northern cardinal, you might see the male summer tanager (Piranga rubra), which is the only totally red bird in North America. The summer tanager eats a wide variety of insects, bugs and spiders. It catches some flying insects in midflight.
