Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt Appoints Members to Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils in Alaska

Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, with the concurrence of Secretary of agriculture Dan Glickman, has appointed twenty-six individuals to fill expiring terms on ten federal subsistence regional advisory councils in Alaska. These individuals were selected from over one-hundred nominations received and reviewed by the Federal Subsistence Board, which manages subsistence uses of fish and wildlife on federal public lands in the state.

Individuals selected as regional council members are Alaska residents who are familiar with regional subsistence practices and issues. The membership of each regional council represents the geographic, cultural, and user diversity within each region. Regional council members serve three-year terms.

As provided for in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980, the federal regional councils were established in 1993 to advise the Federal Subsistence Board and to provide local opportunities for public involvement in the development of federal subsistence regulations. The regional councils meet at least twice each year and represent the Southeast, Southcentral, Kodiak/Aleutian Islands, Bristol Bay, Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Western Interior Seward Peninsula, northwest Arctic, Eastern Interior and North Slope federal subsistence resource regions in Alaska.

The Federal Subsistence Board will request nominations this winter for regional council terms that expire in September 1996. For additional information, please write the Office of Subsistence Management c/o U.S. Fish and Wildlife at 1011 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage, AK 99503 or telephone (907) 786-3888 or toll-free (800)478-1456. Hearing impaired callers may telephone (907)786-3487.
