A man waist deep in water holding a silver fish and his fishing rod

Fishing opportunities vary widely by unit and season. Most units have no fisheries, but during high water periods, good fishing for walleye, perch and northern pike may occur on a handful of tracts.

In addition to the conservation of wildlife and their habitats, the Refuge System and WPAs offer a wide variety of quality fishing opportunities. Walleye, perch, and northern pike are popular game fish. Vehicles are permitted only on designated roads and parking areas so access to some lakes or ponds may be limited. Boats are allowed but may be limited to shallow draft vessels depending on water levels. Boats that must be launched from a trailer are limited to waters accessible from a right-of-way or designated road.
