Boater in kayaks and canoes exploring bayou

Paddling the refuge is an adventurous undertaking. Most of the refuge can flood during winter and spring high river periods, creating a labyrinth of sloughs, bayous and lakes. Boaters should have a GPS when travelling beyond the main river channels, and be cautious of currents and sweepers during high water. Check local conditions before planning a trip.

Public boat launches are available in Louisiana at Lock 1, Fisherman’s Landing Road, Lock 3, and Poole’s Bluff. In Mississippi public launches are at Walkiah Bluff Water Park, and northwest of Picayune MS at the Dan Tabberer boat launch, located where Burnt Bridge Rd. crosses Hobochitto Creek.
