OVERVIEW

1.1 What is the purpose of this chapter? This chapter provides U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) employees with information they need to find out more about the Department of the Interior’s (Department) creation and organization.

1.2 What is the authority for this chapter? See 105 Departmental Manual (DM) 1-3 for information about the Department’s establishment and its management structure.

1.3 In general, when was the Department created and what is its current structure and mission?

A. Creation and organization:

(1) The Department was created by an act of Congress on March 3, 1849. Among other responsibilities, Congress transferred to the new Department the General Land Office, Indian Office, Pension Office, and Patent Office. Over the years the Department has evolved as functions are added.

(2) The Department is organized into offices (e.g., Office of Policy, Management, and Budget; Office of the Solicitor; Office of the Chief Information Officer) and bureaus (e.g., the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Geological Survey). You can find an organizational chart with all of the offices and bureaus at 105 DM 2.

B. Mission: The mission of the Department is to protect and manage the Nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage; provide scientific and other information about those resources; and honor its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated Island Communities.

A. The Departmental Manual (DM) provides chapters on the Department’s mission, objectives, and organization. See 105 DM 1-3. In addition, the DM has individual Parts in Series 02, Organization, with chapters that describe the offices and bureaus. Under that Series, a description of the Service’s organization is found at Part 142 DM—142 DM 1-15.
