Ecological Risk Screening Summary - Victoria Tilapia (Oreochromis variabilis) - Uncertain Risk

Species that are considered uncertain risk need a more in-depth assessment beyond the Risk Summary to better define the species’ risk to U.S. environments.

Oreochromis variabilis, Victoria Tilapia, is a freshwater fish found in East Central Africa. This species has no history of introductions outside of its native range, and history of invasiveness is uncertain. O. variabilis is commercially fished and is present in the aquarium trade outside the United States. It is used experimentally in aquaculture. Numerous U.S. States have prohibited or restricted the possession or trade of this species. This fish has a low climate match with the contiguous United States. Due to lack of knowledge about potential introductions, certainty of assessment is low. The overall risk for this species is uncertain.
