Ecological Risk Screening Summary - Serrasalmus nigricans (a piranha, no common name) - Uncertain Risk

Species that are considered uncertain risk need a more in-depth assessment beyond the Risk Summary to better define the species’ risk to U.S. environments.

Serrasalmus nigricans is a species of piranha native to the Brazilian Amazon. Very limited information is available on this species. S. nigricans does not appear to be in trade in the United States, and several U.S. States have prohibited its possession or trade. No introductions of S. nigricans have been reported outside its native range. History of invasiveness is No Known Nonnative Population. The climate match to the contiguous United States was low, with a medium match in central and southern Florida. The climate match was based on one georeferenced location within the Amazon River Basin, but outside of Brazil. Certainty of assessment was low due to general lack of information and lack of georeferenced locations for a climate match. Given the lack of introduction history and the low climate match, overall risk posed by S. nigricans is uncertain.

Silver Carp Jumping
Aquatic invasive species cause tremendous harm to our environment, our economy, and our health. They can drive out and eat native plants and wildlife, spread diseases, and damage infrastructure. We work to protect our waterways and the communities that depend on them from the threat of invasive...
