Students wearing waders collect water data from a stream

Many different environmental education events and programs take place at Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery throughout the year.

Our largest and most beloved event is the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival, a three-day natural resource education event held every fall at the hatchery to celebrate the return of the salmon to the Wenatchee River. The festival has grown since it's modest start in 1991, and in 2019 over 83 elementary school classes attended the event. In 2020 the festival went online, with videos, activities, and resources for students and teachers.

Throughout the year many other classes and education groups visit the hatchery for tours, educational games, and outdoor recreation. We have salmon for dissections, boots and waders for stream surveys, and snowshoes for winter ecology and snow science lessons. If you would like to bring a class or educational group of any age to the hatchery, please contact our Education Specialist Marjie Lodwick.
