Tumwater Falls and the Yellowstone Hotspot: A Geologic History of Thurston County, Washington

Gary Ritchie, a retired forest ecologist with a PhD from the University of Washington (1971), has had a life-long fascination with the natural world. This includes his passion for rocks, glaciers, volcanoes, and all things geologic.

Ancient supercontinents, Pangea, subducting plates, accreted terranes, the Yellowstone Hotspot, Cascade volcanoes and the great Puget Sound ice sheets have all contributed to the remarkable geologic history of Thurston County. Gary will trace the geologic history of Thurston County from 4.543 billion years ago up to today.
