Conservation Lecture Series: "The Codex of the Endangered Species Act: Volume 1, The First Fifty Years"

On Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at 7:00 PM ET, Author Lowell Baier will discuss "The Codex of the Endangered Species Act: Volume 1, The First Fifty Years"at the National Conservation Training Center, Byrd Auditorium, 698 Conservation Way, Shepherdstown, WV.

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) is recognized around the world as the most important wildlife conservation law ever passed. This critical, and sometimes controversial, protection for species and their habitat turns 50 years old in 2023.

To understand today’s challenges and opportunities, we must first understand the history of the law and its implementation. The Codex of the Endangered Species Act: Volume 1, The First Fifty Years, written by legal and environmental historian and attorney Lowell E. Baier with a foreword by Douglas Brinkley (Rowman & Littlefield; August 15, 2023) is the most comprehensive history of the ESA ever published, and the first to consider the entire history of the law from all angles.

In addition to authoring numerous articles and monographs over the past 60 years, Baier is the author of five award winning books: Inside the Equal Access to Justice Act: Environmental Litigation and the Crippling Battle over America’s Lands, Endangered Species, and Critical Habitats (Rowman & Littlefield: December 17, 2015); Saving Species on Private Lands: Unlocking Incentives to Conserve Wildlife and Their Habitats (Rowman & Littlefield: March 10, 2020); Federalism, Preemption, and the Nationalization of American Wildlife Management: The Dynamic Balance Between State and Federal Authority (Rowman & Littlefield: March 30, 2022); The Codex of the Endangered Species Act: The Last Fifty Years, Volume I; and co-edited The Codex of the Endangered Species Act, Volume II: The Next Fifty Years .

These talks are a part of the NCTC Conservation Lecture Series, which is co=sponsored by The Friends of the NCTC. No tickets or reservations are required.
