Join us this upcoming Wednesday, July 27th at 7:00 pm as Gary Slater, Founder of Ecostudies Institute, presents his lecture on “Conservation of prairie-oak woodlands, an imperiled ecosystem, in Cascadia.”
The prairie-oak ecosystem of Cascadia is one of the most unique and imperiled ecosystems in North America. Never extensive, it supports a unique repository of regional biodiversity, including many species that are now considered rare or endangered in South Puget Sound. Conservation of this ecosystem requires innovative and novel strategies to recover rare species and habitats as well as perpetual management. In this talk, Gary will share some of the collaborative approaches that regional partners, including the military, employ to take on this challenge, specifically drawing from examples of imperiled avian species, including the streaked horned lark, Oregon vesper sparrow, and Western bluebird.
As our COVID-19 Community Levels are at HIGH, masking is required in the Norm Dicks Visitor Center. Lectures are limited to 50 attendees on a first come, first served basis. A special thank you to Friends of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge Complex for hosting the Summer Lecture Series!
