2023 Arizona Southwestern Willow Flycatcher Survey Training – May 5 and May 12
The 2023 Arizona Southwestern Willow Flycatcher training is occurring May 5 (virtual presentations) and May 12 (field visit). Both days are essential to completing the training.
Because this is an early announcement, there is a small possibility these dates may change in the coming month or so due to unforeseen circumstances. However, we would only alter them by a few days if something should occur. The training will occur in early May to take advantage of vocal flycatchers establishing territories.
On May 5th we will have presentations held via Microsoft Teams. Presentations will address flycatcher biology, survey methodology, identification, and other related issues. This virtual training will last approximately 5 hours. Presenters will be from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Salt River Project, and Tierra Right of Way Services.
On May 12th we will convene at Roosevelt Lake near dawn and visit Salt River Project’s Rockhouse Demonstration Site on the Salt River Arm for a Field Visit. We will split into two groups rotating through Field Form discussion and the Site Visit, where we anticipate people will hear and see flycatchers. We will complete training around 10-11 am.
The Tonto Basin Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest will reserve a camping area for participants at Roosevelt Lake on May 11th and May 12th for those who wish to be nearer to our Field Visit in the morning of May 12th.
There is no cost for the training. We are limited to about 30 participants.
If you would like to sign up, please contact Greg Beatty, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at greg_beatty@fws.gov. After signing up, we will distribute a more detailed agenda and documents.
