Yesterday afternoon, Marsha Hart, Environmental Education/Outreach Specialist at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, joined community partners at the Russell County Public Library for the annual Read Across Russell County event. Sponsored by the Russell County Education Association, the event brought together families, students, and local organizations to celebrate literacy and encourage a lifelong love of reading.
The free community event offered a wide variety of activities, including pizza, face painting, character photo opportunities, free books, and more creating an exciting and welcoming environment for attendees of all ages.
At the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery station, students had the opportunity to connect reading with science by learning about pollinators and their vital role in the environment. Children tested their knowledge by spinning the “Pollinator Wheel” and answering trivia questions. Those who participated were rewarded with pollinator-themed stickers and bookmarks.
In addition, young visitors expressed their creativity by making butterfly crafts, a fun and hands-on way to celebrate pollinators and reinforce what they learned.
The event was very well attended and proved to be an enjoyable and educational experience for everyone involved. Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery was proud to be part of a community effort that highlights the importance of both literacy and environmental stewardship.
