Service Helps Define Military Veterans

Written By

When I applied for my job, I put as one of my references a family friend. I suspect they did not contact him – they had my then-current boss and others to talk to. But he was there for me, as he had been at other times in my life.

It will surprise none of the military veterans in our 2023 photo gallery, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Thanks Our Veterans, to learn he was a retired vice admiral. Service to the country, and all of us who live in it, is a hallmark of the military.

I am sure that “the Admiral,” as I called him, would have served as one of my references if he had not been in the Navy. I am equally sure that his military service played a part in the wonderful person he was.

“The Admiral” died several years ago. I hold him close to my heart for all his help over the years. As I put together this photo gallery, I am reminded of him and the service of all veterans to all of us.
