To celebrate Earth Day, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery and Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. hosted an event to connect people with nature, to celebrate the natural environment, and to raise awareness of environmental concerns. The 2022 event was held on Saturday, April 16th. With sunny skies and warm breezes, it was the perfect day to enjoy the outdoors.
Family and friends joined to explore the day’s activities, with over 500 people participating in the event. Visitors could explore various stations, some with demonstrations such as fly tying and fly casting. Other stations provided information about animals, plants, and water quality. Nature crafts for adults and children, temporary tattoos, fishing at Hatchery Creek, archery, thread making from animal fur, and giveaways were also popular throughout the day.
Representatives from the University of Kentucky (UK) Extension Office—Russell County, Russell County Public Library, Trout Unlimited—Louisville and Bluegrass Chapter, Kentucky’s Division of Waste Management, Kentucky’s Division of Water, and Kentucky’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources staffed informational booths and provided interactive activities. Liberty Nature Center from Somerset, KY brought birds of prey that have been rescued and rehabilitated at their facility. Friends of Wolf Creek NFH offered complimentary Red Oak and River Birch trees to guests. Participants also received LED lightbulbs courtesy of South Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (SKRECC) and East Kentucky Power Cooperative, Inc.
Wolf Creek NFH proudly supports partnerships across agencies. Partnerships with other government agencies, non-government organizations, and local entities, allow the Environmental Education specialist to pool resources in order to provide visitors with quality experiences at special events. Without these partnerships, devoted volunteers, and the Friends of Wolf Creek NFH, these events simply would not be possible.
