Los Banos, Calif. — Portions of the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge will be temporarily closed for up to three weeks due to construction and maintenance work on an off-refuge water delivery canal that crosses under Wolfsen Road near State Route 165. During construction activities, Wolfsen Road will be rendered impassable and closed to all vehicle traffic, preventing visitor access to the main entrance of the San Luis NWR.
The refuge facilities that will be closed to the public during this period include the visitor center, elk auto tour route and associated fishing access area, waterfowl auto tour route and associated nature trails. The closure will begin on July 15 and is expected to conclude by August 3, 2018.
Other public access areas of the refuge that are not entered using Wolfsen Road will remain open, including the Kesterson Unit accessed from State Route 140, and the West Bear Creek Unit accessed from State Route 165. The Merced NWR and San Joaquin River NWR are unaffected and will be open during normal hours.
Visit the refuge's website and Facebook page for news and information about this temporary closure, or call the refuge at 209/826-3508.
