Southwest Region Presents the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department the 2016 Recovery Champion Award

On Friday, July 7th, Joy Nicholopoulos, the Southwest Region’s Deputy Regional Director, recognized the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department with the 2016 Recovery Champion Award at the Barton Springs Pool in Austin, Texas. The Watershed Protection Department received the award for their leadership role in the conservation of the Barton Springs salamander and the Austin blind salamander, as well as their efforts to protect areas critically important to the health of the Edwards Aquifer. For more than two decades the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department has worked tirelessly and with many partners on the conservation and recovery of the Barton Springs salamander and the Austin blind salamander. Their efforts serve as a conservation model for others throughout Texas and the Nation. We look forward to continuing our partnership with them to protect the unique and beautiful natural resources of central Texas.
