Partnering to Enhance Habitat for the Endangered Northern Aplomado Falcon

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Coastal and Partners for Fish and Wildlife Programs team up with the Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Peregrine Fund to enhance habitat for the endangered Northern Aplomado Falcon on the Refuge and surrounding private lands. This week a contractor began mechanical removal of brush that has encroached into salty prairie. This brush, mostly mesquite and huisache, reduces available prairie needed for Aplomado Falcons and other grassland birds as well as providing habitat for predators. The goal of the project is to restore 1,000 acres of coastal prairie in south Texas using methods including mechanical removal, herbicide application and prescribed fire.
