The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has scheduled a series of public scoping meetings for Quivira National Wildlife Refuge for three local communities. Quivira has begun work on its Comprehensive Conservation Plan, or CCP. When completed, this 15-year plan will provide long-range guidance and management direction for all Refuge programs. The plan will outline a vision statement and supporting goals, objectives, and strategies.
The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 requires that all refuges be managed in accordance with an approved CCP which, when implemented, will achieve refuge purposes; help fulfill the Refuge System mission; maintain and, where appropriate, restore the ecological integrity of each refuge and the Refuge System; and meet other mandates.
Public involvement is an integral part of the CCP process. The public scoping meetings, presented in an informal, open-house format, are essential to developing a list of issues that the CCP will address. Persons interested can drop by anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. to meet with Service personnel, learn more about the CCP, and provide input. The sessions are scheduled as follows:
Monday, March 8, 2010: Stafford, Kansas; Senior Center, 130 South Main.
Tuesday, March 9, 2010: Great Bend, Kansas; Front Door, 1615 tenth street
Wednesday, March 10, 2010: Wichita, Kansas; Great Plains Nature Center,6232 eas th St. North
More details on the CCP and the public meetings are available by calling Quivira at 620-486-2393, or on the Refuge website at www.fws.gov/quivera
