On November 12th from 7 pm to 8 pm at the Spenard Recreation Center, Martin LeBlanc, Vice President of the Board of Directors for the nonprofit Children and Nature Network, will speak on the importance of taking kids outdoors to experience nature, both to develop a conservation ethic and to promote health.
For the past several years the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has focused on the many benefits of enjoying nature. Memorable experiences in nature help kids appreciate our countrys wildlife and other natural resources, and help them develop a conservation ethic as they grow to be adults. In addition, research shows that children who are connected with nature are happier, healthier, and do better in school. At the event youll have an opportunity to learn about the Children and Nature Networks program "Nature Clubs for Families."
The event is sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the other members of the Get Outdoors Anchorage Steering Committee; including U.S. Forest Service-Chugach National Forest, Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, National Wildlife Federation, National Park Service, Alaska Division of Public Health, Alaska Geographic, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the Friends of Campbell Creek Science Center.
There will also be time to check out resource booths from organizations with outdoor opportunities for families around Anchorage. Make and take home your own trail mix and win a door prize of outdoor gear from REI. Free childcare will be available.
