The purpose of the proposal to reintroduce Sonoran pronghorn is to boost the recovery of an endangered species. Sonoran pronghorn originally ranged widely throughout the Sonoran Desert in southwestern Arizona and northern Mexico. The Sonoran pronghorn is extremely skittish and very fast. Because it uses distance as protection from predators, it prefers wide open spaces.
For more information, please contact James Atkinson, Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Team Leader at Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, by mail at 1611 North Second Ave., Ajo, Ariz., 85321, by telephone at (520) 387-4989, by facsimile at (520) 387-5359 or by electronic mail at James_Atkinson@fws.gov. Submit comments by Dec. 12 using any of the above methods.
Once the comment period ends, the wildlife agencies will prepare a draft environmental assessment to evaluate the social, economic and environmental effects of reintroducing pronghorns into their historic range in southern Arizona.
