National Wildlife Refuge Building in Vermont is First in Agency to Receive ENERGY STAR Designation

The new energy-efficient administrative and visitor facility at the Nulhegan Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge in Vermont is the first U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service building to receive national ENERGY STAR designation. The building is recognized for its capacity to harvest sunlight, conserve electricity and recover heat. It was one of 175 buildings in New England to receive the designation last week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

building is the first Energy Star building in the Fish and Wildlife Service. It is one of eight new energy-efficient facilities that we have built at our field stations in the Northeast Region to meet national environmental design standards. We strive to make our buildings as environmentally sensitive as possible as part of the Services mission to conserve national resources."

A joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency and the federal Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR was introduced in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the label can be found on more than 50 kinds of products, new homes and commercial and industrial buildings.
