NEW STATE ADMINISTRATOR SELECTED FOR ECOLOGICAL SERVICES IN TEXAS

Dr. Joy Nicholopoulos has been selected as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services State Administrator for its Ecological Services Offices in Texas. Nicholopoulos was the New Mexico State Administrator for the past six years. She will assume her new duties at the end of January.

"

As the Texas State Administrator, she will supervise four ecological services field offices located in Arlington, Austin, Corpus Christi, and Clear Lake. She will coordinate all policy level actions and issues among the Texas field offices, the regional office in Albuquerque, and the national office.

The four Ecological Services Field Offices provide assistance to Federal and State agencies, local governments, businesses, and the general public relative to conserving, protecting, and restoring habitat for a variety of wildlife, including migratory birds and federally threatened and endangered species.

"I am looking forward to establishing additional conservation partnerships with state agencies, the military, and other Federal agencies that assist us with implementing the Endangered Species Act," said Nicholopoulos. "I believe partners make the difference when it comes to conserving, and ultimately recovering, imperiled species. By working together, we may be able to preclude the need to add species to the Federal list of threatened and endangered species."

Nicholopoulos began her career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the southwest spending two years in the Student Career Experience Program. She then worked in Washington, D.C. for five years as the Listing and Candidate Conservation Branch Chief. She has also worked for the Department of Defense at Fort Bliss, Texas A&M Universitys Agricultural Research Station, the University of Texas at El Paso, and with Trident Sea Foods for the Alaskan Fishery Programs.

Nicholopoulos holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biology from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a Ph.D. in Biology from New Mexico State University.
