Conservation Community Marks 70th Anniversary of Duck Stamp Act
Millions of waterfowl and other migratory birds are beginning their annual spring migration through the southern United States to breeding grounds in the north. During their journey, which may take several weeks and cover thousands of miles, many of these birds will rest and refuel at hundreds of National Wildlife Refuges located at key stopover points along the four North American flyways.
Many of those refuges, and the birds they sustain, represent a living monument to the success of the Federal Duck Stamp Program. Today marks the 70th anniversary of the passage of the 1934 Duck Stamp Act, a visionary law that in many ways spawned one of the most successful conservation programs in history.
