The Interior Department will hold a ceremony commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway on June 5 at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, Assistant Secretary of Interior for Fish and Wildlife and Parks Craig Manson announced today.
The event, featuring a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the Americans who participated in the decisive World War II battle will include Manson, Assistant Secretary of the Navy H.T. Johnson, Rear Admiral Anthony L. Winns, other senior military officers and representatives of veterans organizations. In addition, the Fish and Wildlife Service will hold a reception honoring veterans in Honolulu on June 3.
"The Battle of Midway was the pivotal naval battle of World War II, and we will honor the brave Americans who risked their lives and often gave their lives for our freedom," said Manson, an Air Force Academy graduate and Air Force officer who now serves as a colonel in the Air National Guard.
"I would especially like to thank the Interior Department for taking the lead in paying tribute to those brave souls who fought so valiantly to ensure that America and indeed the world, would live in freedom," said Johnson, a retired Air Force general.
The Honolulu reception, sponsored by the Friends of Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will also honor the 60th anniversary and provide an opportunity for those unable to get to Midway to learn more about the atoll
