Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge Celebrates 99th Birthday of National Wildlife Refuge System

2003 Will Mark 100 Years of Conservation Success

To celebrate the 99th anniversary of the founding of the National Wildlife Refuge System, Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge is offering a series of free refuge hikes to the public in March through some of the most beautiful and remote coastal habitats in California. The guided hikes will highlight the role of the refuge in the restoration, conservation, and enhancement of wildlife and coastal dune habitat. The hikes are scheduled on:

    Friday March 15, 2002 10 a.m. to 1 p.m
  • Saturday March 30, 2002 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Those interested in the hikes need to meet at the Oso Flaco Natural Area parking lot at the end of Oso Flaco Lake Road off Highway 1, about three miles north of the city of Guadalupe.

The hikes will provide visitors with a chance to observe the diversity of plants and animals found in this unique coastal ecosystem and will highlight the plight of threatened species such as the western snowy plover. In addition, the public will learn the role of refuges in aiding threatened and endangered species and find out how they can help and become involved with the Refuge.

The hikes will also interpret the history and future of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Contact the Refuge for additional information. Regular scheduled docent led hikes are offered year round into the dunes through the Refuge
