Coastal Cutthhroat Trout Will Be Considered For Federal Protection

Agreement in principle does not constitute an emergency listing

The Southwest Washington/Columbia River population of coastal cutthroat trout is still being considered for Endangered Species Act protection under an agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and various environmental groups.

This population of cutthroat trout is one of 14 species included in the national agreement announced August 29 by Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton. No decision has been made yet to protect the trout and the agreement does not constitute an emergency listing. Instead it redirects funding to species most in need of listing under the Act.
