Sixty years ago, on August 14, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8857, establishing Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge "for the purpose of protecting the natural feeding and breeding ranges of the brown bears and other wildlife...." In celebration of this landmark anniversary, the public is invited to join Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge staff and the Kodiak Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as Senator Ted Stevens and other distinguished guests, at a 60th birthday barbeque at refuge headquarters on Tuesday, August 7 from noon to 2:00 pm.
