SERVICE ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF ANNUAL REVIEW OF FINDINGS ON PETITIONED SPECIES AWAITING ACTION UNDER THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that a review of findings on species it was petitioned to list in the past shows that 21 species continue to warrant listing but are precluded by the need to take higher-priority listing actions first. In addition, five petitions to reclassify species from threatened to endangered remain warranted, but action is also precluded by the need to address higher-priority listing actions.

The Service determined from the review that one species, the swift fox (U.S. population), no longer warrants listing under the Act.

Under the Act, citizens may petition the Service to list or reclassify a species. The Service then determines whether the species warrants protection or reclassification. In some cases, including those reviewed here, the Service determines that the listing action is
