Beattie, the first woman to the direct the 9,000-person agency, arrives in Alaska this week to meet with some of the Services 500-plus employees in the state, and to tour the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.
The Service manages 16 wildlife refuges in Alaska, with more than 77 millions acres of land. The Service also has responsibility for migratory birds, endangered species, walrus, sea otters and polar bears. The mission of the Service includes enforcement of federal wildlife laws, administration of the Endangered Species Act (up for reauthorization this year), wetland protection and management and distribution of Federal Aid to states of fish and wildlife restoration.
