Overview

White bladderpod, Physaria pallida also known as Lesquerella pallida, is a soil specialist (adaphic), only known from San Augustine County, Texas.  As a member of the mustard family (Brassicaceae), this plant is only found on alkaline soils atop glauconite outcrops (composed primarily of potassium, iron and aluminum silicate) of the Weches glades in the east Texas Pineywoods. Soils with a unique mineral content and that are seepy and saturated during the winter and spring months are ideal for the white bladderpod. As an annual plant, the species reproduces by seed and relies on its seed bank during the summer months, then the soils dry up and the plant died. There are nine wild sites on private lands and the remaining tenth wild population occurs within a Texas Department of Transportation highway right-of-way.  An additional introduction site was planted in 2009 on private lands, but the status of this site is unknown. Current stressors include: encroachment of nonnative vegetation into outcrop habitats through farming and grazing; trampling of plants by cattle; a restricted potential for recruitment of new individuals to populations; habitat loss and conversion for the development of oil and gas infrastructure; and, effects from climate change climate change
Climate change includes both global warming driven by human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases and the resulting large-scale shifts in weather patterns. Though there have been previous periods of climatic change, since the mid-20th century humans have had an unprecedented impact on Earth's climate system and caused change on a global scale.
