Overview

Remya mauiensis is a short-lived perennial member of the aster family (Asteraceae). The genus Remya is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. This species is a small perennial shrub, about 90 cm (3 ft) tall, with many slender, sprawling, or scandent (climbing) to weakly erect branches. The branches are covered with a fine tan fuzz near their tips. The leaves are narrow, up to about 15 cm (6 in) long, and are bunched at the ends of the branches. The leaves are coarsely toothed along the edges, and are green on the upper surface. The lower surface is covered with a dense mat of fine white hairs. The flowers are small, about 0.7 cm (0.3 in) in diameter, dark yellow, and densely clustered at the ends of their stems. It is distinguished from the other two members of the genus by its hairy stems and foliage, leaf shape, and length of the petiole.
