Overview

Pritchardia bakeri, a palm in the Arecaceae (palm) family, is up to 9 m (30 ft) tall with a smooth grayish trunk 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) in diameter. The crown contains 35 to 40 ascending to stiffly spreading leaves, slightly wavy, 0.6 to 0.9 m (2 to 3 ft) long and wide blades on 0.6 m (2 ft) long leaf stalks. Leaf blades are glossy green above and silvery grayish below, divided in up to 60 stiff-tipped segments. Stalks are moderately covered along the edges at the base with irregularly shaped papery tan wings or fibers. Flower and fruit stalks have up to three very long primary branches that expand and greatly exceed the leaf when in fruit and are hairless or covered in velvety hairs. The large, shiny, black ellipsoid to spherical fruits 5 cm (2 in) long and 4 cm (1.6 in) wide.
