FWS Focus

Overview

Schiedea helleri, a member of the pink family (Caryophyllaceae), is a short-lived perennial vine. The stems are smooth below and are minutely hairy above, are probably prostrate and at least 0.15 m (0.5 ft) long with internodes at least 4.0 to 15.0 cm (1.6 to 6.0 in) long. The opposite leaves are somewhat thick and range from 10.0 to 14.0 cm (4.0 to 5.5 in) long and 4.5 to 6.0 cm (1.8 to 2.4 in) wide. The leaves are triangular, egg-shaped to heart-shaped, conspicuously three veined, and nearly hairless to sparsely covered with short, fine hairs, especially along the margins. The perfect flowers occur in loose, open branched clusters, each branch being 20.0 to 26.0 cm (8.0 to 10.2 in) long. The flower contains three styles and probably ten stamens. The fruits are capsules, about 3.0 to 3.4 mm (0.12 to 0.13 in) long. This species is the only member of the genus on Kauai that grows as a vine (Wagner et al. 1999).
