Overview

Platydesma remyi [Melicope remyi], a member of the Rutaceae (rue) family, is a shrub or shrubby tree 1 to 3 m (3.3 to 9.8 ft) tall with spreading branches densely glandular punctuate throughout. Leaves are opposite and ovate with the narrower end towards the stem and with entire margins. The upper leaf surface is smooth while the lower surface has sparsely fine hairs when young. Flowers occur in axillary cymes composed of one to three flowers per inflorescence. Petals are white or cream. Filaments are connate and form into a staminal tube. The fruits are round (subglobose), 20 to 30 mm (0.08 to 0.12 in) in diameter, and four-lobed. Seeds are five to eight per cell. The petioles are 0 to 6 mm (0 to 0.24 in) long. The leaves, calyx, and fruit are covered with short hairs (minutely puberulent). The new combination for this species is Melicope remyi in the most recent taxonomic treatment in the checklist of Hawaiian Flora.
