Overview

Cyanea hamatiflora ssp. carlsonii of the Campanulaceae (bellflower) family, a palm-like tree, grows 3 to 8 m (9.8 to 26 ft) tall arid has alternate stalkless leaves 50 to 80 cm (20 to 31 in) long and 8 to 14 cm (3 to 5.5 in) wide. Clusters of 5 to 10 flowers have a main stalk 1.5 to 3 cm (0.6 to 1.2 in) long and each flower has a stalk 0.5 to 1.2 cm (0.2 to 0.5 in) long. The fused calyx is topped with five small narrow lobes. The magenta petals are fused into a one-lipped tube 6 to 8 cm (2.3 to 3.1 in) long and 0.6 to 1.1 cm (0.2 to 0.4 in) wide with five down-curved lobes. The purplish-red berries are topped by the persistent calyx lobes.
